Training and Treatment Protocols

I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) with the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC) and have been in private practice since 1993.

My training and credentials include a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (sculpture and film) from the University of British Columbia; a Masters in Counselling Psychology from the University of British Columbia; and, an Interdisciplinary PhD (Sociology and Anthropology, Education, Communication, and Religious Studies) from Simon Fraser University. I also served for four years on the Advisory Council of the University of Victoria's Multiculturalism and Dispute Resolution Project.

I am a Certified EMDR Practitioner and have also continued my studies with advanced EMDR training. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a highly validated treatment protocol that can help people suffering from the debilitating effects of trauma. Untreated trauma can cause frightening and unpredictable reactions to triggering situations. EMDR can be used to help clients address and transform powerful and unwanted reactions that have developed as a result of painful memories that have been only partially or insufficiently processed. Careful preparation and respect for the client's readiness and comfort levels are an important part of safe and successful EMDR work.

I am a Certified Imago Relationship Therapist. Imago Relationship Therapy (IRT) is a communication theory and therapy. It was originally designed with a focus on committed romantic partnerships. Over the years its efficacy has been such that it can be applied to other types of relationships as well, such as between friends, family members and coworkers. In each communication scenario, IRT helps to restore connection through helping each party to feel truly heard and understood. Imago teaches that each person is responsible for the "between" in their relationships.

All the therapeutic protocols that I use to support clients to realize their therapeutic goals are founded in a client-centred approach. As it may best serve the client, I also utilize Attachment theories, Polyvagal research, Jungian concepts, Gestalt work, Guided Imagery exercises, Jikiden Reiki (Level Two certification), outdoor therapy and Lifespan Integration (a deep resetting of the mind/body connection to help empower clients more mindfully manage upsetting situations).

Emotional Support Animals

My dog (Banjo) and my cat (Hermione) are available as emotional support animals during your session. If there is a concern around having animals present, they can easily be kept elsewhere.
